For those that don’t know, I have a small business that makes purposeful & trendy clothing for you & your littles designed with intention & love.
But, when I started this business I knew NOTHING haha. It’s true. I have an elementary education degree with a Bible minor and math emphasis- nothing business related at all. But, it was a dream of mine. My husband told me to just start. I responded by saying, “But I don’t know how to start.” He encouraged me to watch videos and find out all I don’t know.
And here we are!! So, if you have a dream (any dream), know that it’s doable! But if your dream is to start a small business, here are a couple things I wish I knew when starting.
DON’T LET FEAR HOLD YOU BACK
Like my husband told me, “Just start.” Don’t compare to other businesses/people. Just start it. You’ll never know if you’ll succeed until you try.
RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH
If you’re like me, you won’t know anything at the beginning, & that’s okay! Watch YouTube videos of people talking about how to start, read blog posts on the pros & cons of Etsy vs. Shopify vs. WooCommerce, etc. There is so much content out there these days to help you; take advantage of it.
IT’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK
Now, don’t get me wrong. It’s a LOT of work, but in reality, starting a business isn’t this far off pipe dream that’s impossible. It’s feasible and actually easier than I expected it to be.
TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME
Most businesses don’t blow up overnight. Some do- but most don’t. So, don’t get discouraged if you aren’t having as many sales as you thought you would. They’ll come. Just keep showing up & giving it your all.
MAKE BUSINESS TO DO LISTS
As you think/research something you need to do, instead of letting it daunt you, have an ever-going task list for your business on things you need to do, make, create, etc. Then, you can prioritize the things on there as needed while not forgetting the newest thing you found out you need to do.
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT
You don’t want to start a small business unless you’re passionate about what you’re doing & selling. People love and are gravitated towards what others are passionate about! Think long & hard about what you love and are passionate about!
